On 8 July, in Cozumel, in the state of Quintana Roo, the body of investigative journalist Melvin García was found dead in an advanced state of decomposition. García had returned to the region just a few months earlier, having been forced to relocate after being severely persecuted due to his book on a former state governor's involvement in a crime committed in 1999.
