Details

Soe Naing was detained in Yangon on Friday December 10 2021 whilst covering a  large nationwide 'silent strike' protest against military rule.

He is one of many journalists to be arrested since the February coup but the first known to have died in custody. Journalists have been a particular target of Myanmar's authorities, and they have been especially vulnerable when covering anti-military protests and the ensuing crackdown.

More details around the circumstances of Soe Naing's death have yet to come out.
