Details

Ahmad Mohamed al-Mousa, a member of the media collective known as Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently (RBSS), was killed by a group of masked men in Idlib, Syria. The group, which told of al-Mousa’s murder on its Twitter account, did not reveal any further details. At least two other members of RBSS, which was honoured last month by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) with its 2015 international press freedom award, have been killed since it was formed in April 2014. The New York-based CPJ issued a statement condemning the murder. Its executive director, Joel Simon, said:
“Just a few weeks ago, nearly 900 journalists, press freedom advocates, and supporters attending CPJ’s international press freedom awards stood together in solidarity with Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently. Today we are all standing together again, this time in mourning.”
On its website, RBSS has documented Isis’s draconian punishments for those who violate its version of Islamic law. It has also reported on the impact of airstrikes on Raqqa. Its members have paid with their lives for trying to record Isis’s crimes. In October 2015, Ibrahim Abd al-Qader was killed by Isis alongside fellow journalist Fares Hamadi in Urfa, southeastern Turkey. In May 2014, Al-Moutaz Bellah Ibrahim was abducted and murdered by Isis.
