Incident
Cambodian journalist killed reporting on illegal log trade
Details
Taing Try, who was a member of the Khmer Journalists for Democracy Association and contributed to several newspapers, was working in the eastern Kratie province when he was shot early on Sunday.
Three suspected log traders were later arrested, according to police, who said they were still investigating the motive for the killing.
Sok Sovann, the president of the Khmer Journalists for Democracy Association said 48 year-old Taing Try had travelled to the area with several other reporters who were investigating illegal logging when he was attacked.
Sok Sovann denied local media reports that the slain journalist was trying to extort money from the suspects. He said Taing Try had been repeatedly accused of extorting money from timber traders in the past - although there was no evidence to back up the allegations.
