Lal Jayasundara
Explosion
A bomb attack occured against a mega musical show in Colombo.
The attack resulted in the death of two persons, including a journalist. Lal Jayasundara, a 20-year-old photojournalist for the Wijeya newspaper group, was standing close to the stage and taking photographs of the show when the bomb exploded, killing him and a young woman instantly. Sinhala Buddhist extremist groups, including a section of the Sanga-dominated Hela Urumaya political party (Sinhala Heritage party), had launched a protest campaign against the show on the grounds that it was being held on the first anniversary of the death of popular Buddhist preacher Soma Thero.
