George Koiliaris
Road accident
Greek state television NET on Sunday paid tribute to George Koiliaris, one of Greece's few war correspondents, who died from injuries sustained in a road accident in Afghanistan a month ago.
Koiliaris, 54, died from head injuries in an Athens hospital on Saturday. The journalist had been seriously hurt in October during an aid mission to Afghanistan when the vehicle in which he was riding overturned. He was initially treated in a hospital in Abu Dhabi before being flown back to Greece via military transport plane. "Koiliaris was characterised by sensitivity, attention to detail and a true care for people, which he proved in his last and fatal journey to Afghanistan," government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros said. A journalist since 1978, Koiliaris had reported from conflict zones in the Balkans, the Caucasus, the Middle East and on the humanitarian crisis in Darfur.
