Abdulla Telman Alishayev, a well-known journalist in the republic of Dagestan the presenter of the Islamic television programme "Mir vashemy domu" [Peace be on your house], was shot in the evening by unidentified people, has died in hospital, the duty officer of the Dagestan Interior Ministry has told RIA Novosti news agency.
The attack on Alishayev occurred yesterday in a district of Makhachkala; the journalist was in his own car. Two attackers shot the journalist from a Makarov pistol, Interfax news agency adds. Alishayev received wounds in the shoulder and the head. He was operated on, but it was not possible to save his life.
[Interfax news agency, Moscow, in Russian 0900 gmt 3 Sep 08 reported a representative of the Makhachkala Interior Directorate press service as saying that the attack on the journalist was most likely connected with his professional activity. Alishayev was an "active ideological fighter" against Wahhabism in the republic, Interfax reported. He was the author and presenter of a number of programmes on the Islamic channel "TV-Chirkey", and one of the authors of the documentary film "Obyknovennyy Vakhkhabizm" (Ordinary Wahhabism), the report said.]
