The chief editor of a local newspaper in the northwestern Turkish city of Bandirma has been murdered after death threats were made against him over his coverage of a corruption scandal.
The 53-year-old editor-in-chief of the daily Life in Southern Marmara, Cihan Hayirsevener, was walking to his office on 18 December when he was shot in the leg three times by an unidentified assailant who fled in a car, the Anatolia news agency reported. One of the bullets ruptured an artery and doctors were unable to save his life.
