Details

The explosion occurred during a ceremony at which Banadir University students were being awarded graduation diplomas.

The suicide bomb killed more than a dozen people including also three government ministers and nine students. Radio Shabelle reporter Mohamed Amin Adan Abdulle, 24, and Al-Arabia TV cameraman Hassan Zubeyr Haji Hassan were killed in the bombing of the Shamo Hotel located in a district known as “Kilometre 5” on one of Mogadishu’s main avenues.

A third journalist, Yaasir Mario, was critically injured and later died in the Medina hospital according to his family. Yaasir had been operating in the recent three months as a fixer and a cameraman. At the time of his death he was no attached to any specific media house. No group has so far claimed the bombing but the Islamist militia Al-Shabaab is widely suspected. A hotel employee said one of the students participating in the ceremony detonated an explosive vest that he was wearing.
