A convoy of politicians, lawyers and news media was ambushed by gunmen on the way to an election office in the lawless southern Philippines province of Maguindanao.

Lea Dalmacio, Gina Dela Cruz, Rosell Morales, Henry Araneta, Marife "Neneng" Montaño, Alejandro “Bong" Reblando, Victor Nuñez, Mark Gilbert “Mac-Mac" Arriola, Hannibal Cachuela, Ernesto “Bart" Maravilla, Ronnie Perante, Joel Parcon, bienvenido Jr Legarte, Rey Merisco, John Caniban, Arturo Betia, Noel Decina, Fernando "Ranny" Razon, Jhoy Duhay, Andres "andy" Teodoro, Romeo Jimmy Cabillo, Reynaldo “Bebot" Momay, Napoleon Salaysay, Santos Gatchalian, Lindo Lupogan, Adolfo Benjie, Rubello Bataluna, Marites Cablitas, Evardo Jolito, Daniel Tiamson, and Jepon Cadagdagon Fifty-seven people, including at least 32 journalists and other news media staff, were shot and hacked to death and most of them buried in shallow graves on a hillside off the highway. It was the bloodiest single attack on the news media on record anywhere in the world.
