Lasantha Wickrematunga, 52, was gunned down as he drove to work on Thursday outside the capital Colombo.
He edited the Sunday Leader newspaper, which was sharply critical of the government's military drive against the Tamil Tiger rebels. The government has condemned the killing and the president asked the police to speedily investigate. The main opposition said they had no faith in the police and demanded an international probe.
