Umesh Rajput, a correspondent for the Hindi daily Naidunia, was shot dead by two masked men at Churra in Chhattisgarh.
Police had also recovered a letter, written in red ink, threatening that he would be killed if he did not stop publishing news from the area.
Family members of the 32-year-old said he had lodged a complaint with the police about a fortnight ago about the threats received by him following publication of a news item.
