Romeo Olea
Shooting
Radio broadcaster Romeo Olea was shot dead while travelling to work on Monday in what press groups said was the fourth murder of a local journalist this year.
The Philippines is one of the world's most dangerous countries for journalists and police said the killing of the radio journalist was likely linked to his show, which focused on a small city government in the east of the country. Olea's wife reported that he had received death threats, local police director Senior Superintendent Victor Deona told AFP.
"There is a very big possibility that this is work-related," Deona said. Olea, 49, who worked with local private radio station DWEB, was shot twice in the back while riding his motorcycle to work in the small city of Iriga before dawn, said local police spokesman Inspector Ayn Natuel. It was the second killing of a DWEB reporter in less than a year.
