Details

Veteran journalist Jyotirmoy Dey was shot and killed by four assailants riding motorbikes in Mumbai, officials said.

The assailants rode up behind Dey, who was also riding a scooter, shooting him four Times Saturday, the Press Trust of India reported. The shooters were able to escape. Investigators said the nature of the killing suggested it may have been ordered by the oil mafia, which had been extensively covered by Dey, 56. Dey covered crime and corruption for more than 20 years and most recently wrote for the English language tabloid Mid Day. His body was cremated Sunday, CNN-IBN reported.

In later developments, Jigna Vora, who was the deputy bureau chief of the respected Asian Age newspaper, allegedly paid a contract killer to take out the veteran crime reporter. Police sources have suggested the motivation for the murder was professional rivalry. Vora and J Dey, who was shot dead, had had a very public falling out over access to sources in Mumbai's criminal underworld. Police believe Vora may have ordered the killing so she could become the top reporter on the Mumbai crime circuit.
