Details

Two people were killed and seven others injured Friday when a truck slammed into press and police vehicles on a highway in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, authorities said.

The accident took place shortly before 6:00 a.m. on a stretch of route RS-122 known as the “curve of death,” the state highway patrol said. The fatalities were identified as Enildo Paulo Pereira, host of a news program on Bandeirantes television, and his cameraman, Ezequiel Barbosa. The driver of the truck lost control of the rig and plowed into three media vehicles and three police cars near the city of Farroupilha.

News crews from Bandeirantes, SBT, RBS and other media outlets were there to cover a planned state police operation against a criminal outfit. The car carrying the Bandeirantes team was crushed when the truck pushed it into the other vehicles, authorities said. Seven other people were hurt, including two who suffered serious injuries and were taken to a hospital in Porto Alegre, the state’s capital. Sobriety tests carried out at the scene indicated the truck driver was not under the influence of alcohol, police said.
