Details

Four Peruvian journalists, three of them women, were killed early Monday after their vehicle skidded off the highway and plummeted over a cliff in central Peru, a journalist association confirmed Tuesday.

The accident occurred at 6:30 a.m. local time (1130 GMT) along the Central Highway in the region of Carpapata. The four were heading from the capital of Lima to Chontabamba in the Chanchamayo Valley some 280 km away to cover a story. Their vehicle skidded out of its lane along the stretch of highway between the towns of Tarma and Chanchamayo and fell some 35 meters before landing on the riverbed of the Tarma River, sources said, adding that the cause of the accident was still under investigation.

The victims had been identified as Lorena Chauca, web editor of a news portal called Publimetro; Marisol Rojas; Maria Gomez, president of the local Tarma chapter of the National Association of Journalists (ANP); and photographer Javier Azcue who worked for the daily El Comercio. Rescue workers Tuesday were looking for the body of Maria Gomez, which may have been swept away by currents.
