Details

Veteran broadcast media person and the director of the Tamil Thendral Service and the Marketing Division of the National Radio Nurania Hassn has been killed in a motor accident. Five more others were wounded.

The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation announces with regret the passing away of its former director of Muslim service and the director of Tamil Thendral and Marketing divisions Muhandiram Mudiyanselage Nuraniya Hassan in a motor accident. The vehicle carrying the SLBC staff including the deceased met with the accident this morning. They were heading for Jaffna to organize a Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival in Jaffna. Four other members of the SLBC staff and another person injured in the accident have been admitted to the Anuradhapura General Hospital for treatment. The injured SLBC employees are Upali Yapa, Chandana Dissanayake, Anura Jayalath and Mohammed Jafir.

The van in which the SLBC workers were traveling collided with a truck in Rambawe, Anuradhapura. The late Mr. Nurania Hassan has also functioned as a cricket and an international sports commentator. He was 49 years old at the time of his death. Acting director of the Anuradhapura teaching hospital Dr. Upali Seneviratne told the national radio upon inquiry that the hospital staff had promptly treated the injured. He added that the injured are receiving residential treatment at the hospital and surgeries have been performed on two of them. Chief minister of the Sabaragamuwa province Mahipala Herath issuing a message of condolence on the sudden death of veteran media person Nurania Hassan said that the he had rendered an invaluable service for the communal unity in the province.
