A 33-year-old radio broadcaster was shot dead by still-unidentified gunmen in Barangay Salipyasin, Kabasalan town in Zamboanga Sibugay province Monday morning, police said.

The victim, Mario Vendiola, was on his motorcycle heading for barangay Poblacion when 2 men also on a motorcycle shot him several times, according to Chief Inspector Ariel Huesca, information officer of Police Regional Office 9. Vendiola, anchorman and reporter of 101.7 FM Radyo Natin Kabasalan, was hit in the head and died on the spot, according to a report from the National Union of Journalists the Philippines.

Huesca said Vendiola just finished filing a news report and and was on his way home when the attack happened. Police said Vendiola was not known to be a hard-hitting journalist, and avoided commentaries criticizing local politicians. Police are still looking at possible motives for the murder, including an alleged affair with a woman. Vendiola is the 154th Filipino journalist killed since 1986, according to NUJP Zamboanga official Julie Alipala.
