Journalist fatally shot in Guatemala
Shooting
Broadcast journalist Carlos Alberto Orellana Chávez was discovered fatally shot on Aug. 19 in the southern department of Suchitepéquez, Guatemalan police said. He was 72. The victim was found in the municipality of San Bernardino just hours after he was reported missing, according to Pablo Castillo, a police spokesperson.
Orellana Chávez, whose car was stolen, is the fourth journalist killed in Guatemala in 2013. Police have arrested a suspect in connection with his murder. Orellana Chávez, who had spent the past 25 years working for La Venadita radio, hosted a TV show and also served as mayor of the city of Mazatenango in Suchitepéquez from 2002-2004, was killed a week after Fredy Rodas, a correspondent for Sonora es la Noticia radio, was hospitalized after being shot five times.
The attack on Rodas occurred less than a week after radio journalist Luis de Jesús Lima was fatally shot in the city of Zacapa on Aug. 6. The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) has warned of growing threats to journalists in Guatemala. The Miami-based organization has also denounced government-backed advertising against the daily elPeriódico, a newspaper that often publishes stories about official corruption, rights abuses and narco-trafficking. Guatemala is home to an average of 16 murders a day, one of the highest rates in Latin America.
