A French journalist who helped train fellow reporters in Haiti after the devastating 2010 earthquake was killed in a road accident in the countryside, his employer said Monday.

The media organization Internews Europe said in a statement that Philippe Allouard died along with an IT engineer of a radio program who was only named as Leonidas. The accident happened Saturday between the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince and the western coastal city of Leogane. No other details about the accident were provided. A spokesman for Haiti's national police department said he was unaware of the incident.

Allouard worked as the country director for Internews Europe, which is a media development company that supports independent media. The group provided life-saving information on the radio after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti's capital. Haiti's roads are particularly dangerous because there are few traffic signs and vehicles are often over loaded with passengers.
