Journalist is shot and killed in Paraguay near the border with Brazil

Carlos Manuel Artaza, a journalist in Paraguay was shot five times and killed on Thursday April 25 in Pedro Juan Caballero city, near the capital of Asunción, where he was hospitalized, reported newspaper ABC Color.

The night before, a group of men in motorcycles opened fire on Artaza's car. Artaza was a spokesman for the department of Amambay (in the border with Brazil) who had made several critical opinions on the radio before the elections on Sunday April 21, La Nación reported.

The Journalist's Union of Paraguay said that the journalists in this area near the border with Brazil receuve constant threats and highlighted the cases of Aníbal Gómez, of Radio América and ABC Color correspondent Cándido Figueredo, both of whom have received death threats.
