Newsletter: September 2013

The survey was created in collaboration with UNESCO and the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF), and supported by the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs. It looks at the global safety situation for female journalists, and the nature of the dangers they face during their work – from cyber-bullying and emotional harassment, to sexual assault. Often, these crimes are not reported because of powerful professional and cultural stigmas. INSI is now working with other experts in the field to analyse the results, and will publish a series of recommendations aimed at increasing the safety of female journalists and their families worldwide later this year. We have had an unexpectedly large response, and would like to thank all of those who participated. For more information, please contact INSI’s Director Hannah Storm Hannah.Storm@newssafety.org. This project is one of our many initiatives to improve the safety of journalists worldwide. Earlier this month, INSI Director Hannah Storm attended the first Global News Forum in Seoul. Organised by the South Korean broadcaster KBS and the Asia-Pacific Broadcast Union, it was an important opportunity to meet our colleagues working in one of the most challenging areas in the world for media safety and discuss ways INSI can support news organisations and journalists throughout Asia. In early October, INSI is running free training for over 20 female journalists in Cairo, Egypt. The course will cover medical training, tips to work safely in the field and security awareness. To keep up to date with upcoming safety training projects, sign up to our mailing list by emailing info@newssafety.org, or keep an eye on our ‘Safety Training’ page http://www.newssafety.org/page.php?page=3103. If you would like to suggest safety training where you are, please get in touch. By signing up to our mailing list, you will receive our latest safety advisories and analysis – such as this month’s travel advisory for journalists working in Lebanon – straight to your inbox. http://www.newssafety.org/news.php?news=20677&cat=press-room-news-release We are delighted to announce that we are re launching www.newssafety.org later on this year. The website, which will be a hub of safety information for journalists working in dangerous locations around the world, will have a brand new look and aims to be more user-friendly. INSI’s 10th AGM will take place on October 30 at the BBC Broadcasting House in London. All are welcome, but only members of INSI may vote on matters relating to INSI.
