Ahead of World Press Freedom Day in May, we will be launching the findings of this research survey along with a multi-media report based on dozens of interviews that we have carried out over the past few months as well as a series of expert essays on some of the key areas of journalism safety. We are confident that this will help make a real difference in the situation for journalists around the world. The survey is closing on March 2 so there’s still time to contribute to this important project. We are proud to have given INSI's backing to a global set of safety standards for freelancers also launched this month and are working closely with colleagues in the United States to support the promotion of industry-wide guidelines, the strengthening of partnerships to help improve journalism safety and the furthering of conversations to help understand what the industry can do better to support all who work in the news media. This week we held our latest INSI Board meeting at which we were thrilled to be able to advise our Board that we have trained more than 650 journalists in the past year. That number looks set to grow further in the next few months as we plan training with partners in different regions of the world including Latin America and the Middle East. As a small organisation we are proud of this big achievement. Also this month, we coordinated the latest meeting of the News Safety Group which brings together those who make the decisions to deploy journalists at our member news organisations. We had a very interesting discussion about the current challenges in safety and the need to address issues such as crisis management. We were pleased to welcome the AFP back as INSI members and we look forward to working with them to help support their journalists and to learning from them about the good practices they are pursuing in the area of media safety. We were also grateful to receive the support of Bloomberg who have renewed their membership of INSI, and we thank them for their backing and again look forward to working closely with them. The news is not all positive however. This month has seen the killings of journalists in Honduras, Colombia and the Philippines, and we pay tribute to those of our colleagues killed for simply doing their work and all those who daily pay the price of the pursuit of press freedom. Finally, looking ahead to next month. We have reprinted our groundbreaking publication ‘No Woman’s Land – On the Frontlines With Female Reporters’ in advance of International Woman’s Day in March. The book, which is the first of its kind dedicated to the safety of female journalists, is available in e-book version in Arabic, Spanish and Russian and can also be bought via the INSI website. All profits from the book go towards safety training for journalists.
