We are run by journalists and rooted in practical experience and real expertise. We are supported by the most prestigious news organisations in the world. We are committed to delivering practical, relevant and very often life-saving information and training, to journalists and media workers. The new INSI website provides a simplified platform for information, where using and sharing content is now easier than ever. Read about what it has to offer here. We are now publishing short advisories for journalists around the world to help them in situations where they may find their safety compromised. Entitled ‘In Brief’, these bulletins will be both geographical and thematic and provide information that is easy to access and quick to read. Our latest In Briefs cover Ukraine (Crimea), Somalia and grab bags. This month, we published our annual Killing The Messenger report, an analysis of the causes, countries and circumstances in which newsmen and women die. This latest version for 2013 was carried out for INSI by the Cardiff School of Journalism and can be read here. We also published a good practice safety guide for journalists and media workers, funded by UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC). The publication, entitled ‘Journalism Safety: Threats to Media Workers and Measures to Protect Them’, provides a global overview of what is being done to protect journalists and shows why some measures are more effective than others. It also gives recommendations to all who are interested in supporting the safety of journalists and combatting the issue of impunity which continues to provide an incentive to those who want to silence our colleagues. The full report and press release are available here. Looking ahead to next month, with our colleagues from the International Women’s Media Foundation, we will be presenting the findings of our unprecedented survey into violence against women in the news media. This will take place in a side session to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on March 10, shortly after International Women’s Day. The findings, coupled with our combined expertise in this area, will allow us to make recommendations to improve the situation faced by many of our colleagues worldwide. Staying with the subject of women journalists, ‘No Woman’s Land: On the Frontlines with Female Reporters’, will be available to buy as an e-publication in Spanish, Arabic and Russian in the coming weeks. You can already down the English e-book for iPad here and for Kindle here. We are also looking for a new addition to the INSI team. We’re recruiting a Project Manager, at what is an extremely exciting time for our organisation. Please contact us if you’re interested in applying for this role.
