NEWSLETTER: April 2014

In Beirut, we ran two intense security and medical training courses for 22 Lebanon-based female journalists. The programme covered subjects such as how to plan and prepare for assignments in hostile environments, how to stay safe in demonstrations, how to disengage from attackers and how to carry out basic, potentially life-saving first aid.  With the media focussed on Ukraine, INSI was focussed on the media in Ukraine, where we provided safety training in partnership with Internews to almost 90 journalists over a series of days, working with them to ensure they were able to mitigate the risks they faced and report safely from a rapidly changing security environment. And with the World Cup approaching in Brazil, we also oversaw safety and medical training for more than 50 journalists using instructors who were alumni of a 2012 INSI ‘Training of Trainers’ course. Topics covered in this most recent training included how to report safely in demonstrations, how to take cover from shooting and first aid.
