INSI newsletter: April

The report, which can be read in full here and is being promoted via #underthreatmedia, concluded that journalism has never been more dangerous and journalists have never felt more at risk. The dangers faced by members of our industry were underlined in April when 11 journalists and media workers were killed in countries including the Philippines, Ukraine, Yemen and Libya. We pay tribute to those of our colleagues who paid the ultimate price simply for doing their job and we hope INSI’s report will help make a real difference to the situation for journalists around the world and reduce the number of those whose lives are lost in the pursuit of press freedom. This month, we were at the forefront of discussions about journalism safety when we attended a meeting of security experts representing members of the European Broadcasting Union, who we are privileged to have as a member of INSI. We were also pleased to take part in the Freelancers at Risk conference, which was held at the National Press Club in Washington DC, where we worked with other media support groups, journalists and news outlets. We welcome the continued conversations about how a set of industry-wide safety guidelines for freelancers can be better implemented. Looking ahead to this weekend, we will be celebrating World Press Freedom Day #WPFD2015 in the Latvian capital Riga where INSI will run a physical safety workshop and take part in discussions about our report and the latest challenges to media safety. We are also looking forward to next month when we will run safety training for post-graduate and MA students at Cardiff University, which will ensure that a new generation of journalists will be better equipped with essential safety skills before they enter the workplace.  We are also thrilled to be consolidating our relationship with colleagues in Brazil, where we will be running safety training for journalists and helping them better mitigate the risks they face.
