Media worker killed in northern Afghan province

A media worker has been killed following a blast in Faizabad city, capital of Afghanistan's northern province of Badakhshan, authorities said on Friday.

"A young journalist named Yama Behroz, who worked as a freelance reporter with local media in Faizabad city, was killed following an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack late on Thursday," Abdul Basir Haqjo, head of provincial journalist council, told Xinhua.

The IED explosion took place near Yama's house in the city, 315 km north of Afghan capital of Kabul, according to Haqjo.

Motive behind the attack remained unknown and an investigation was launched into the incident, provincial police officials said.

The Afghan Journalist Safety Committee (AJSC), a media advocate independent group, has condemned the incident.

The Kabul based AJSC group has recorded some 39 cases of threat and violence against journalists during the first half of 2015, reflecting a decline by 43 percent compared to the first six months of last year. One Afghan journalist has been killed and four others wounded during the period.
